North

The north of Guayaquil is characterised by its modernity. Like the south of the city, this area has the highest concentration of population. The north of the city has the largest number of shopping centres in Guayaquil. This makes it the ideal area for shopping. There are also important green areas such as the National Recreation Area Los Samanes, which was created with the intention of recovering the native vegetation and fauna or also the Botanical Garden of Guayaquil has approximately 324 species of plants.

There is a remarkable local and international gastronomic offer where areas such as Urdesa or Plaza Guayarte are the most outstanding.

The points that connect Guayaquil with the country and the rest of the world are in the north, where the José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport and the Jaime Roldós Aguilera Land Terminal are located.

Downtown

The Guayaquil downtown is where the city was born, it is where the process of growth and expansion that the city has undergone since its foundation can be understood. The legacy of this history can still be seen in the heritage buildings that bear witness to the transformations that have taken place over time in the city.

This is the most photographed area of Guayaquil, where churches, parks, squares, boardwalks, the Sana Ana hill and its neighbourhood Las Peñas next to the Cerro del Carmen are the popular stars in the lenses of travellers. This area is characterised for having the largest number of museums in the city, and it keeps within them the history of Guayaquil, the region and the country.

South

The south of Guayaquil is made up of residential and industrial areas. The most important patrimonial construction is the Parque Forestal, which houses the Eloy Alfaro Civic Centre Theatre.

The southern zone has vital importance in the economy, as it is home to the seaport, a strategic place in foreign trade for the region.

Although Santay Island is separated from the city of Guayaquil by the Guayas River, the access to the National Recreation Area Santay Island and Gallo Island is in the south of the city through a pedestrian bridge. There you can go hiking, biking, bird watching, and view the village that exists on the island, as well as the breeding centre of the Coastal Crocodile. Santay Island was declared a Ramsar site in 2000.
